“Tell me a fact and I’ll learn. Tell me a truth and I’ll believe. But tell me a story and it will live in my heart forever.” – Indian proverb
Nick King is a sports reporter and sports anchor in Fresno, CA. He grew up dreaming of becoming a SportsCenter anchor (talk about sports and try to be witty, funny – yes, please). After getting an education by working on the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill’s student-run newscast, ‘Carolina Week,’ Nick’s lived a version of that dream, working at local television stations in Virginia, Missouri, and now California, covering athletes of all ages and skill levels, in just about every sport imaginable. He’s been to hundreds of memorable games, and talked about them on TV — though the truly unforgettable days of the last decade center around telling the stories of people the public might otherwise never know about.
There was the Northern California EMMY nomination for a documentary about an amazing blind girl running on her elementary school cross-country team; Edward R. Murrow sports reporting awards for features on a high schooler who fought Cystic Fibrosis by surfing as often as possible and a young woman skiing down a mountain for the first time since a terrible car accident made her blind; a 160 lb. dad pushing his 260 lb. autistic son in the Boston Marathon; a young man with Down syndrome who inspired a court storming after scoring his first career basket on senior night; a runner on the Autism spectrum who completed a marathon after doctors thought he might never walk, and many, many more.
Nick also started a special series in 2016 called, “In Your Backyard,” where he finds outdoor adventure in Central California – from the Pacific Ocean, to the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and everywhere in between. This started because, as a transplant, Nick felt like too many locals didn’t fully realize, or take advantage of the beauty they have so close to home. People come from all over the world to drive Highway 1 through Big Sur, or to walk through Yosemite, one of the crown jewels of the National Park System, and these magical places are only a few hours from Fresno. “In Your Backyard” was nominated for a Northern California EMMY.
So, if Nick’s not watching a game, playing basketball or reading a book, he’s probably road tripping somewhere, looking for the next story.
